According to an official report released by Naked Security, Google has removed 49 malicious extensions to the Chrome Web Store in April, discovered and pointed out by researcher Harry Denley.

Extensions look like legitimate cryptocurrency wallet software, but when you install it, the creators will gain all access from you and steal your funds.

Harry also said in an interview with Naked Security and he explained that new ones were appearing every day, and pointed to this April Fool’s record, which contained 49 malicious software. You should be especially careful if you use Ledger, KeepKey, MetaMask, Jaxx and others.

Google recognizes this problem and combats malicious extensions and said:
We want to ensure that the path of a user discovering an extension from the Chrome Web Store is clear and informative and not muddled with copycats, misleading functionalities or fake reviews and ratings.

Pay attention to the following tips that may protect you from similar software:

  • Install as few similar extensions as possible and only from official websites and stores,
  • Always read reviews from real users,
  • Also, check the reputation of the developer himself and software updates.
